Peptides Uncensored: Missing Context Behind the Controversy

GLP weight loss peptides

Let’s talk about something that’s been causing quite a stir lately – GLP peptides. If you’ve been following health conversations online, you’ve probably seen everything from miracle success stories to scary warnings. Today, I want to cut through the noise and share some real talk based on my nearly 20 years of clinical experience. Consider this your resource for “Peptides Uncensored: Missing Context Behind The Controversy!”

Let’s Address the Elephant in the Room

Yes, peptides can be scary when you don’t understand them. And yes, the side effects are real and can be awful – when they’re used incorrectly.

When I first learned about peptides, I didn’t fully understand them either. As a functional medicine practitioner for almost two decades, I’ve seen countless health trends come and go. So while I think some of the online criticism is unnecessarily harsh, it’s clear that many people still don’t fully grasp how GLPs work when used properly.

The Problem Isn’t the Tool – It’s How It’s Being Used

Of course there are side effects with GLPs – when used incorrectly in pharmaceutical doses. Most conventional doctors want patients to stay on these medications forever. So naturally, they prescribe high doses that not only cause side effects but also lead to tolerance issues. Then you need even more – which is exactly what they want!

Here’s what many people don’t realize: GLP-1 (Glucagon-Like Peptide-1) is actually a hormone your body produces naturally in your intestines. It plays an important part in blood sugar regulation, insulin secretion, and appetite control. The pharmaceutical versions like “GLP-1” and “GLP-2” are simply mimicking and amplifying a process your body already has.

The difference between pharmaceutical dosing and strategic micro-dosing is significant. Pharmaceutical doses typically start at levels designed to produce dramatic effects quickly, whereas properly designed micro-dose protocols begin at the minimum effective dose and should have someone carefully adjusting based on individual response. More is not better! This approach minimizes side effects while allowing your body to adapt gradually.

A common question regarding gaining the weight back when they stop… well, if you don’t change your habits, then yes, people often gain the weight back when they stop. But that’s because they didn’t have the proper foundational factors, such as The Carnivore Diet or The Keto Diet, in place first. The same thing happens on a restriction diet without a GLP! And it’s the same foundational factors that are essential for any successful health transformation.

The Digestive Issue Everyone’s Ignoring

Let’s talk about gut motility problems. If optimizing digestion isn’t included in your protocol, then yes – gut motility issues can be exacerbated with GLPs. But here’s what no one’s mentioning: how many people already had gut issues before they started a GLP?

This is why I insist on comprehensive testing and addressing gut health as part of any protocol. Implementing strategic detox strategies is important as well!

Now, back to peptides and weight loss!

The Muscle Loss Myth: What’s Really Happening

The muscle loss concern is more complex than most realize. Aside from under-eating due to appetite suppression and inadequate protein (which happens with any calorie restriction, not just with GLPs), people lose muscle for many other reasons:

~ Previous diet history and chronic calorie restriction. Many women over 40 have been on countless diets throughout their lives, each one potentially damaging their metabolic rate and inhibiting muscle mass. Years of yo-yo dieting and severe calorie restriction create a body that’s primed to lose muscle before fat as a survival mechanism. This history existed long before any peptide was introduced. But what to people blame?? THE GLP-1 PEPTIDE.

~ Existing hormone issues (thyroid + adrenals). By midlife, many women are dealing with both diagnosed and undiagnosed thyroid dysfunction, particularly T3 conversion issues that directly impact metabolism and muscle preservation. Adrenal dysfunction from chronic stress impacts cortisol patterns, which can accelerate muscle breakdown as well. These hormone imbalances are often missed by standard testing but play a major role in muscle maintenance. But what to people blame?? THE GLP-1 PEPTIDE.

~ Connections to cortisol and sex hormone imbalances. The perimenopause and menopause transition brings significant changes in estrogen, progesterone, and testosterone levels that directly affect muscle tissue. YES, all three hormones affect body composition! Without addressing these hormone shifts, muscle loss becomes almost inevitable regardless of what interventions are used. But what to people blame?? THE GLP-1 PEPTIDE.

~ Muscle loss due to chronic stressors. Women over 40 are typically juggling career demands, family responsibilities, and health concerns while sleep quality has become compromised in this stage. This chronic stress state creates a metabolic environment that prioritizes fat storage and muscle breakdown. Addressing these lifestyle factors is essential before blaming any therapeutic intervention… i.e. THE GLP-1 PEPTIDE; or any peptide for that matter.

These are precisely the factors I assess and address with every client who comes to me. My comprehensive protocols tackle each of these areas methodically through testing, targeted nutritional/ Keto Diet and Carnivore Diet interventions, lifestyle modifications, and hormone optimization—all before we even consider adding peptides to the equation. By the time a client is ready for peptides in my practice, we’ve already established a solid foundation that minimizes all risk factors and sets them up for long term results.

On repeat… it’s much easier to blame the peptide than to address all of these underlying root causes. I’ve discussed this extensively in The Wellness Collective over the past month.

Ready for help, and not ready for weight loss peptides yet? This is exactly what I do with my clients in both my 1:1 coaching as well as my group Weight Loss Accelerator program.

My Experience Tells a Different Story

One of my goals throughout my near 20-year career in Functional Nutrition and Functional Medicine has been to present all sides of the picture of any topic in question, and debunk the misinformation. If you decide to unfollow me because of this stance, or criticize me, that’s perfectly fine. I’ve definitely been a rogue Carnivore/ Practitioner for many years anyway! Even funnier is that I’ve been in practice longer than many Carnivore Diet critics have even been of any legal age to do anything, let alone the Carnivore Diet! I actually remember a time when “all I had to do” was debunk myths about The Keto Diet lol Good times 😉

Anyway, here’s what I’ve observed with my clients who have researched and used peptides correctly, with true micro dosing. My research based clients who have used these peptides, and truly micro dosed correctly, have proven to have lost fat and gained muscle based on significant tracking data, as well as the correct macro balance, workout programs, hormone optimization, gut healing, rest and recovery protocols, and more.

Aside from all of this, I’ve seen improvement in individuals who were doing everything right before and still struggling with inflammatory markers such as CRP, fasting insulin; poor visceral fat readings, etc. I’ve also had clients come to me on pharmaceutical doses, with zero results. And guess what. We still have to fix all of the aforementioned things. Then the magic happens!

Micro-dosing: A Buzzword that has Become a Misunderstood Concept

Let’s dig into this one because it’s important. Many people who claim they’re microdosing their weight loss peptides actually aren’t. Nor are they cycling these weight loss peptides, or any peptides for that matter, correctly. Then they stall… just like when the body adapts to any other diet intervention.

Let me clarify what true micro-dosing means, based on my clinical experience. Microdosing isn’t just “taking less” – it’s a precise approach that involves:

~ Starting at approximately 5-20% of standard pharmaceutical dosing.
~ Gradually titrating up based on individual response metrics… again, more is not better!
~ Splitting amounts on a weekly basis, vs. one larger bolus once or even twice per week.
~ Implementing strategic cycling protocols (Typically ranges from 8-16 weeks on depending on the individual, followed by 2-8 weeks off. Again, depending on the individual.).
~ Adjusting timing based on circadian rhythms, meal timing and more.
~ Monitoring specific biomarkers to track metabolic response, inflammatory markers, etc.

These strategies prevent receptor down-regulation, minimize side effects, and create sustainable results. I’ve helped guide thousands of individuals to refine their protocols for not just for peptides, but for all lab work, supplementation, etc. over years of clinical practice, and the difference in outcomes when this is all done correctly is remarkable.

And as for weight loss peptides, or even other cellular peptides for mitochondrial health, healing, etc. the clients who follow proper micro-dosing protocols typically experience almost no side effects, other than the good ones like more consistent results, AND even better, avoiding the dreaded weight loss plateau effects!

Not a One-Size-Fits-All Solution

Before you go on thinking I’m trying to make these peptides seem fancy, or that I’m pushing them on everyone, let me be crystal clear: These peptides aren’t for everyone – obviously. It takes an especially dedicated client who is willing to do the work and the research to be successful.

And on a deeper level regarding side effects (that most critics won’t even grasp): if you take anything you’re fearful of, you will absolutely create your own side effects through that fear response. This goes for more than just weight loss peptides.

Additionally, this isn’t just motivational talk – it’s science. The nocebo effect is well-documented in medical literature, where negative expectations produce negative outcomes. When you approach any intervention with fear, your body releases stress hormones like cortisol that can interfere with its effecacy and trigger inflammatory responses. I’ve seen clients with identical protocols experience completely different results based largely on their mindset and beliefs about the protocol.

The mind-body connection is powerful, and your thoughts about any intervention whether it’s a peptide, a supplement, or even a food – can significantly impact how your body responds to it. This is why I spend time addressing mindset with my clients before implementing any protocol. I know all too well that if someone things Carnivore or Keto won’t work for them, then it definitely will not!

The “Not Enough” Weight Loss Criticism

Something else I find frustrating is the criticism of using weight loss peptides if someone “only” only has a certain amount of weight to lose. What I tell clients is that weight loss is relative. The desire to lose 30 pounds to one person might be equivalent to 100 pounds for another. Who is anyone to judge how much someone wants or needs to lose?

Did you know that weight, even if it’s “only” stalled at 30 pounds, is actually still a metabolic health problem? So if someone takes a GLP microdose to help with metabolic health, and as a byproduct loses 30 pounds, that would not be criticized?

The “Unknown Long-Term Effects” Argument

One final point about not knowing the long-term side effects… Even though peptides have been around for many years (contrary to what many realize), we DO in fact know the long-term side effects of being obese, diabetic, having high inflammatory markers, etc.

Let’s look at some facts: GLP-1 receptor agonists have been used medically since 2005, with millions of patient-years of data. While I’m still not endorsing the medical establishment on their approach, the research on metabolic outcomes is substantial. What many critics don’t mention is that these medications have shown cardiovascular benefits beyond weight loss, including reduced risk of major adverse cardiovascular events.

Meanwhile, the data on obesity-related health risks is overwhelming:

  • * Increased risk of heart disease, stroke, and diabetes.
    * Higher rates of certain cancers including breast, colon, and endometrial cancers.
    * Increased inflammation and oxidative stress at the cellular level.
    * Reduced mobility and quality of life.
    * Decreased life expectancy by up to 14 years in severe cases.

We know exactly where metabolic inflammation leads regarding cardiovascular health and more. So what if these peptides could help someone avoid those known dangerous long-term effects?

When a client works with me, I conduct a thorough risk-benefit analysis based on their specific health metrics and medical history. This isn’t about pushing peptides – it’s about making informed decisions that consider both the potential risks of the intervention and the known risks of metabolic dysfunction. And again, any peptide is not a first – or even second line of defense, so to speak, with their customized protocol(s).

Beyond GLPs: A Whole World of Peptides

Did you know there are tons of other peptides besides GLP-1s that can support weight loss, fat loss, cellular health, brain health, and so much more? Many people focus solely on GLPs without understanding the broader world of peptide therapy.

As someone who’s been immersed in natural health for nearly two decades, I’ve seen remarkable results over the last few yers with various peptides that most people have never heard of. For example:

  1. Growth hormone secretagogues that can support lean muscle maintenance during fat loss.
  2. Other “fat loss” peptides that are not in the GLP class that can help target dangerous visceral fat.
  3. Thyroid-modulating peptides bioregulators that can help optimize metabolic rate.
  4. Gut-specific peptides that target healing and optimization of the digestive system.
  5. Mitochondrial-enhancing peptides that improve cellular energy production.
  6. Cognitive peptides that support brain health and function.

Each of these categories offers different benefits and works through distinct mechanisms. The key is knowing which peptides to use, when to use them, and how to combine them for optimal results.

In my practice, I will help clients research the best “stacks” that combine multiple peptides strategically, based on comprehensive testing and individual health goals. This targeted approach allows for more precise interventions with fewer side effects than one-size-fits-all pharmaceutical approaches.

Transitioning Off Peptides: A Common Question

A question I’m frequently asked is: “What do people do if they’ve benefitted from GLP peptides and don’t want to take them forever? How do they come off?”

When someone has been properly microdosing (and I mean true microdosing, not just splitting standard doses) and has all the foundational factors in place, they should be able to cycle off with no issues.

** Just in case context was missed, I have in fact always had a “food first” approach, then “test don’t guess” – not just going based off of symptoms. If a client is in need of more work on hormones, gut/ detox health, sleep, tailored workouts/movement, or stress management, we address those first. It isn’t until all of that is dialed to the best we can, that I even entertain the peptide discussion. These foundational elements aren’t just complementary to peptide therapy – they’re essential for efficacy at a super low dose, as well as for maintaining results after cycling or discontinuing.**

KEY POINT!!

The key is that these peptides should be viewed as tools to help the missing pieces of getting metabolism and hormones back on track, not lifetime medications. When someone has been microdosing for weight loss and fat loss correctly, and has built solid foundations, the body is in a much better place to maintain the benefits.

Gradually tapering even micro doses rather than stopping abruptly gives the body time to adjust. Throughout this process, monitoring key biomarkers also helps track to see how metabolism, inflammation and other factors related to why someone started said peptide, are responding.

Keep in mind that when used properly, these peptides help reset metabolic patterns and improve hormone signaling. If someone has done the foundational work alongside them, the body will be much better equipped to maintain results.

Food for Thought…

If you’re considering peptides, please work with a qualified practitioner like myself who understands:

  • **Proper dosing and cycling.
  • **The importance of comprehensive testing.
  • **How to address root causes.
  • **The role of nutrition and lifestyle.
  • **Individual factors that affect your response.

What makes my approach different is that I don’t just guess – I investigate, test, personalize, and support. My methodology includes:

  1. Comprehensive functional testing – Not just standard bloodwork, but detailed hormone panels, gut health assessments, metabolic markers, and more to identify the true root causes of your health challenges.
  2. Personalized protocol design – Based on your test results, health history, and goals, I create customized protocols that may (OR MAY NOT) include specific peptides, nutritional interventions, lifestyle modifications, and targeted supplements.
  3. Strategic implementation – Precise timing, dosing, and cycling strategies designed for your body’s unique needs, not cookie-cutter approaches.
  4. Ongoing monitoring and adjustment – Regular assessment of progress, side effects, and results, with protocol adjustments as needed.
  5. Education and empowerment – I ensure you understand not just what we’re doing, but why we’re doing it, so you can make informed decisions about your health.

After nearly two decades in clinical practice, I’ve learned that sustainable results come from comprehensive, individualized protocols – not one-size-fits-all approaches.

I’m committed to helping my clients find real, lasting solutions – not quick fixes. If you’re interested in learning more about how peptides might fit into your health journey, let’s have a conversation about what would work specifically for YOUR body and YOUR goals.
