Ketosis, Weight Loss & Fat Loss… Debunking the Starvation Myth!
For many midlife women struggling with weight loss resistance and hormone issues, both the Keto (and Carnivore) Diets have given a glimpse of hope when everything that used to work, just does not anymore.
Yet, there persists a troubling misconception that Ketosis—the metabolic state central to keto and carnivore approaches—is essentially equivalent to starvation. This misunderstanding not only creates unnecessary fear but may prevent women from exploring a potentially transformative nutritional strategy. A strategy that I’ve been following personally with amazing results for almost 20 years, as well as that of which I’ve helped thousands of clients implement successfully to finally get permanent weight loss and wellness results.
As a nutritional approach that shifts your body’s primary fuel source from glucose to fat, Ketosis represents a natural metabolic flexibility that our ancestors likely experienced regularly.
Far from being a state of starvation, a properly implemented Ketogenic/ Carnivore Diet can offer midlife women a sustainable path to addressing the complex hormone issues, inflammation, and body composition struggles that often makes weight loss and fat loss particularly challenging after 40.

Back to Ketosis… Understanding the fundamental differences between nutritional ketosis and starvation isn’t just academic—it’s essential for women making informed choices about their metabolic health. When implemented with attention to proper nutrition, protein intake, and overall energy/ caloric sufficiency, ketosis offers a physiologically distinct experience from the damaging effects of true caloric deprivation.
Ketosis vs. Starvation!
Let’s explore why equating ketosis with starvation represents a fundamental misunderstanding of human metabolism, and how this knowledge can empower your journey toward better health and sustainable fat loss!
Again, I want to reiterate that the idea of ketosis being equivalent to starving is a misconception. Here are reasons why they are not the same, considering historical and modern research:
1. Nutritional Ketosis vs. Starvation: In ketosis, the body uses fat as a primary energy source, either from dietary fats or stored body fat, while in starvation, the body is deprived of all fuels and vital nutrients. Ketosis is a metabolic state that provides energy, and if the diet is properly formulated, it should not deplete muscle mass and essential nutrients.
2. Presence of Calories and Nutrients: Keto Diet was developed in the 1920s to treat epilepsy, therefore must include adequate intake of calories and essential nutrients.
3. Controlled State: Ketosis achieved through a ketogenic diet is a controlled state where carbohydrate intake is purposely reduced, but energy and essential nutrient requirements are met. True starvation leads to energy and nutrient deficiencies.
Hormones, Muscle Mass and More!
4. Hormones: In ketosis, insulin levels are low, promoting fat burning without the stress-induced hormone changes that occur during starvation, such as increased cortisol levels, decreased sex hormones, low leptin, etc.
5. Muscle Preservation: Ketosis, spares muscle mass (as long as adequate protein is consumed with resistance training) by providing an alternative fuel source, whereas starvation will have a catabolic effect.

Long Term Research… Most of the “experts” out there who are criticizing, do not even realize the science that is actually behind this way of eating!
6. Since the 1920s, research has shown the safety and efficacy of ketogenic diets for certain medical conditions, providing positive metabolic effects compared to starvation. These include benefits for epilepsy, obesity, and type 2 diabetes.
Not to mention the true health benefits!
7. Health: A well-formulated Keto diet supports health and wellbeing with regular intake of essential fats, proteins, vitamins, and minerals. Starvation causes malnutrition and tons of health problems.
8. Undereating: If someone under-eats while on Keto, of course it causes issues… nutrient deficiencies, hair loss, muscle loss, similar to the effects of chronic calorie deprivation. This is why I have always said, if you under eight on Keto or Carnivore, it’s still a restriction diet.
Embracing Ketosis as a Metabolic Strategy, Not a Starvation Diet
Understanding the clear distinction between nutritional ketosis and starvation empowers midlife women to make informed choices about their metabolic health. When implemented thoughtfully like I’ve done with thousands of women over the last 18 years—with adequate calories, sufficient protein, and nutrient-dense food choices—a ketogenic approach offers a physiologically sound strategy for addressing the complex hormone and metabolic challenges that come up throughout this stage of life.
For women struggling with insulin resistance, inflammation, or stubborn weight gain, ketosis provides a metabolic pathway that works with your body’s natural abilities rather than against them. The key lies in proper implementation: focusing on nutrient density, consuming adequate protein for muscle preservation, and ensuring overall caloric sufficiency to support your active lifestyle and hormone health.
Hesitant to dive in??
If you’ve been hesitant to explore ketogenic nutrition due to concerns about “starving” your body, rest assured that a well-formulated ketogenic diet represents the opposite of deprivation. Instead, it’s about nourishing your body in a way that optimizes fat metabolism while providing all the essential nutrients needed for vibrant health during midlife and beyond.
Remember that your nutritional journey should always support your overall wellbeing—physically, mentally, and emotionally. A properly implemented ketogenic approach isn’t about restriction, but rather about reclaiming the great metabolic function you used to have, along hormone balance, during a time when your body needs it most.
Taking the Next Step: Why Professional Guidance Matters
While understanding the principles of the Keto and Carnivore Diet is a great start, implementing these approaches effectively can be complex. Here’s why working with an experienced nutrition practitioner can make all the difference:
Personalized Approach: Your metabolic plan should be tailored to your unique metabolic history, lifestyle, and goals. This is exactly what I do with my clients.
Proper Nutrient Balance: Ensuring you’re getting the right balance of macronutrients and micronutrients is crucial for success. Especially on Keto and Carnivore Diets!
Monitoring and Adjustments: Regular check-ins and adjustments are often necessary to optimize your results.
Functional Testing: the combination of bloodwork and functional testing, with the right strategic approach for Macronutrient balance can be a complete game changer for your long term results. The testing is key to further uncover other underlying imbalances that are affecting hormones, gut health, detoxification, and SO much more!
